I have an old inland grinder that worked fine the last time I used it which was about a year ago. When I turn it on hear the motor but the shift doesn't turn. Does anyone have any suggestions to get it working again? Last edited on Mon Jul 20th, 2015 06:20 pm by andrea

Phase One:
Be sure it's turned off (unplugged is best!) and grab the grinder head and gently turn it by hand. If it doesn't turn, there may be glass grit under the grinder head. Try taking it off and cleaning the area with a putty knife & damp paper towel, then try to turn it.
If it is still stuck, you may see some blockage next to the shaft where it goes through the plastic pan. Carefully clean the space around the shaft to free it. When the shaft finally turns by hand, it will probably work OK with the motor. I guess you might turn it upside-down and shake out any loose debris onto newspaper or plastic.
If it doesn't turn freely by hand, the motor won't turn it either. Then, we're onto Phase Two....Last edited on Tue Jul 21st, 2015 01:10 pm by Tod

good suggestion Todd....I might add to first spray the grinding head with water a few times, let it sit to have the water get the glass grit "soft", and then try Todd's suggestions.

Hi Tod. I think it's time for phase 2.
Yesterday I thought it might need to be lubricated so I put in Liquid wrench, and earlier this morning it turned with the assist of a wrench (wrench over pieces of wood to not damage the spindle) which is an improvement over yesterday. There was no apparent grit anywhere on the shaft.
After reading your post, I put some water along the shaft with a q-tip. It's a very slim opening. I tried slipping a piece of paper in, the only thing that would fit, which absorbed the oil I put in yesterday, and to try to dislodge build up. It went in about 1/8" or so. It still doesn't turn by hand after sitting a few hours.
