This is from Paul Pickel...I asked him to describe how the mosaic pieces are applied to the wall....
read it and then relook at the video.....
When we do mosaics we first prepare color scale sketches and then upon approval prepare colored ( chalk) cartoons. We work with a studio near Venice who takes our cartoon an makes a reverse drawing of the cartoon dividing the drawing into interlocking sections about 12” x 18”ea,. The mosaic is then selected piece by piece , cut to size and glued to the reversed drawing . The sections will fit tightly together on the wall. At the site our men apply Laticrete 254 to the paper side and prepare the wall with Portland Cement. The sections one by one are applied to the wall and carefully fitted together and pounded smooth. After maybe three sections are on the wall and fitted together they begin the process of washing off the paper. Scribble Lines were drawn on the paper before it was divided into sections so that the sections can be fit together on the wall as no color or design is seen. Then the paper is gradually washed off revealing the color and design. Once all the sections are on the wall the mosaic is grouted and cleaned.
